Apollo 18: Trailers, Clips, & Posters

In Apollo 18, "Found Footage" horror comes to outer-space.

In Apollo 18, the seemingly inauspicious (its release date was changed more than five times) sci-fi horror film, director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and producer Timur Bekmambetov seek to answer the hypothesised question: What is the true reason why we never go back to the moon?

All things considered, this is pretty much a question nobody is asking, and in fact, Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon has clumsily explained the reason why we kept going back. But according to Apollo 18, NASA did returned to the moon after its last official launch in 1972 but this unofficial Apollo 18 mission is the reason why we never went back. Creepy little green or grey men, I assumed?

All said and done, the first-ever integration of space-faring exploration into the Found Footage horror mockumentary genre might just be a refreshing change to both run-of-the-mill stereotypes.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972, was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.

Interested for a taste of what kind of terrifying horror is in store? Dimension Films has thankfully provided us a few glimpses of the creepy misadventures of the luckless astronauts from Apollo 18.

The latest, and in our opinion the best out of the three trailers released.

The first trailer.

The second trailer.

And here are the international editions of the posters released for the film.

Henry Cavill's Superman: First (Unofficial) Close Look

It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's our first unofficial close look of Henry Cavill's Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel!

We have earlier sworn off the heartless spoiler antics of covering the leaked video clips and images from much-anticipated films such as Marvel Studios's The Avengers and DC and Warner Bros.'s Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises, out of respect for the director and production crews of the respective film, following our coverage on Tom Hardy's Bane and the big City Hall fight. As much as we continue to refrained from such spoilery coverages, we can't help but to post these extremely spoilery images for a reason.

With the earlier leaked photos of Henry Cavill in full Superman outfit making the rounds online, many fans were horrified/outraged at the purported omission of Superman's infamous red underwear.

Today, a new batches of leaked set photos giving us a clearer shot of the outfit confirmed the bold change of costume (much like the bold "DC Comics - The New 52" initiative for the comic books). The material of new outfit seemed to closer to some kind of a scale (in a way, quite similar to Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man), and there are some kind of a semi-wrist band, silver surrounding his leg leading to the weird belt buckle-looking ornament atop Superman's seemingly accentuated Kryptonite "jewels".

We have earlier seen the first official image of Henry Cavill's Superman. Now hit the jump to feast upon the action-packed, ultra-ripped brand new, red underwear-less Man of Steel.

The Avengers: Awesome New Promotional Art

The Daily Zombie's Year Three kicks off with another batch of awesome promotional art from one of the most anticipated films of 2012, Marvel Studio's The Avengers.

Another month bring us yet another batch of cool promotional art from Marvel Studio's The Avengers.

Just last Saturday, we have showcased the unveiling of a new promotional art piece for "The Road to The Avengers", an upcoming collection of comics set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. For this new batch of promotional art that have just shown up online earlier today via Russian movie website, Spidermedia.ru we witness some pretty awesome hi-res images of the CG art of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

While they are rather close to the original source material's comic book roots (with the collective Avengers in typical "Avengers Assemble" pose), we can confirmed from the promotional images that Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is pretty much getting the Ultimate Hawkeye treatment with the shades and all while the cinematic Iron Man has seemingly reverted to his Mark IV armor (or a rumored Mark VII) with the circle-shaped chestplate protecting the arc reactor.

Hit the jump to check out these cool promotional art (click to view in hi-res).

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston and Cobie Smulders. The film is currently scheduled to be released in 3D on May 4th, 2012.

The Hunger Games: First Teaser Trailer

"May the odds be ever in your favor." Lionsgate has released the first teaser trailer for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games.

The promotional machine behind the live-action adaptation of the first chapter in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel series, The Hunger Games trilogy continues at the MTV Music Awards. We have earlier seen the nifty teaser motion poster, featuring Katniss' signature mockingjay pin burning. Now watch the first ever footage from the upcoming film adaptation of the wildly popular young-adult science fiction adventure novel series.

The first film in the planned trilogy stars Jennifer Lawrence (last seen in X-Men: First Class as Mystique) as Katniss Everdeen, the 16-year-old protagonist chosen in a survival battle to the death in the post-apocalyptic country of Panem. Fighting against other children chosen from each of the country's 12 districts, it is a fight to the end where the only survivor is the winner.

The teaser trailer is strictly that, a teaser. Featuring Jennifer Lawrence (last seen in X-Men: First Class as Mystique) as Katniss Everdeen, the 16-year-old protagonist running through the forest and shooting an arrow before showing you the logo of the film, the teaser trailer probably wouldn't make much impression for the folks unfamiliar with the source material except that it's likely an action adventure film featuring a young girl as the lead. What would have promote the film in a more efficient way would be to have the casual folks to have a sense of the "Battle Royale"-esque mixed a young adult sci-fi. That said, we are still at an early stage of the promotion.

For those who missed out our earlier preview, here's the official synopsis of the film:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES will be directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of novels which have developed a global following.

Also starring Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland, The Hunger Games is set to be released on March 23rd, 2012.

The Dark Knight Rises Completes Pittsburgh Filming with a Big Thank You

Christopher Nolan and crew wrapped up filming of The Dark Knight Rises in Pittsburgh with a big "Thank You" note.

No, filming of The Dark Knight Rises, the final epic chapter of director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is still far from completely wrapped up with Los Angeles and New York next in line. Nevertheless, having completed the work in Pittsburgh last weekend, Nolan and the producers took the time to send their express their gratitude to the city for their collaboration with the production with this big newspaper ad.

Thoughtful, for the city which provided us more than a handful of spoiler images and video clips.

WATCH this Insanely Funny X-Men: First Class Deleted Scene

Need further proof of the swinging depravity of James McAvoy's rendition of Professor X in the excellent X-Men: First Class? Well, here it is, and the joke is squarely on Michael Fassbender's Magneto.

Remember the scene in Matthew Vaughn's excellent X-Men: First Class where James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, in their roles of Charles Xavier (Professor X), and Erik Lensherr (Magneto), respectively, visited the stripper bar in an effort to recruit Zoë Kravitz's Angel Salvadore? We are certain you do remember Magneto having a brief display of his magnetic powers by levitating a champagne bucket to convince Angel to display her powers. But do you recall Xavier doing anything since the two chums did specifically indicated that they will show her their powers in return for her to show her's?

Well, turned out there was indeed an unbelievable display of Xavier's amazing psychic ability, but it was eventually deleted for obvious reasons. Thankfully, we can now witness what was left on the cutting room floor thanks to Entertainment Weekly, who have unveiled the deleted scene, which will be collected in the upcoming "X-Men: First Class" DVD and Blu-ray set to be released on September 9th.

Hit the jump to check out the gut-busting scene (Head over to Entertainment Weekly to watch a longer version).

Seediq Bale 賽德克‧巴萊 Preview: Trailers, Posters & Set Stills

The legend of the "Wùshè Incident" (霧社事件) and the spirit of Seediq (賽德克族) comes alive in Director Wei Te-Sheng (魏德聖)'s epic two-part feature film, Seediq Bale (賽德克‧巴萊).

Officially selected as one of the films in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival, Seediq Bale (賽德克‧巴萊), also known as Seediq Bale: The Rainbow Warriors, is an epic retelling of the "Wùshè Incident" (霧社事件) in Taiwan, circa 1930.

Apart from being the single largest and final rebellion against the Japanese colonial forces in Taiwan, the uprising by the Seediq tribespeople led by Seediq Chief and legendary hero Mona Rudao is significant for its tremendous death tolls on both sides of the battle, and more importantly, the eventual massacre followed by the mass suicides of the tribe. It was recorded that a total 827 Seediq were slain or committed suicide while 162 members of Japanese Imperial Army was killed in action.

The subject of "Wùshè Incident" has long been a point of contention for both the Japanese and the surviving Seediq. Both side have accused each other of instigating the violence which included the brutal massacre of both children and women. However, with the Japanese Imperial Army having the advantage of utilizing poison gas canisters via air strikes, and the support of rival tribes in suppressing the unrest, it is evident that the Seediq was severely outnumbered and outmatched with their primitive weapons. And with the added emotional turmoil by many Seediq people who have already been converted into Japanese before the incident, the Seediq were fighting a battle with no chance of winning.

The truth behind "Wùshè Incident" have since been clouded by mysteries, and with those involved mostly killed, the lack of communication due to language barriers by the Seediq, and the propaganda methods of the Japanese Imperial Army, we will never learnt the complex truth behind the incident. That said, the story of the three hundred (yes, three hundred) brave Seediq warriors charging into the three thousand soldiers from the Japanese Imperial Army to behead them in the forest, and the tragic tales of mass hanging of the Atayal tribespeople in the trees, make the timeless story an intriguing one to tell.

The second full-feature film by director Wei Te-Sheng (魏德聖), Seediq Bale was a personal dream project for Wei and it has often times proved to be an overtly-ambitious yet severely underfunded project. While Wei were able to raised NT$ 2 million to shoot a 5-minute demonstration film in an effort to garner financial support, the project were unable to proceed until the unexpectedly popularity of Wei's debut full-feature film, Cape No. 7, in 2008. The film's success reignited the director's ambitious vision for Seediq Bale, and with renowned director John Woo joining as producer, the film began production in 2009 with a US$10 million budget. And if you are of the opinion that there's quite a hefty sum to spare, do note that the film had a crew of 20,000 people.

A bold venture by the investors by any means, Seediq Bale will be primarily in the native Seediq language, and secondarily in Japanese and Taiwanese. Literally meaning "A Real Man" or "A Real Human", the phrase "Seediq Bale" is now more commonly known by local Taiwanese thanks to the insurgence in popular culture covering the subject. From the immortalization of Mona Rudao (莫那魯道) as one of the figures in NT coins, 漫畫·巴萊, the local Taiwanese Manhua that inspired Wei, the Taiwanese black metal band ChthoniC (閃靈)'s fourth studio album of the same name, to artist Linzlang's "Bloody Gaya Fulfilled (大出草)", a painted rendition of the massacre (which is in itself a part of a set of mural paintings first displayed during 2009's Unbound: Voices of the Unknown exhibition), interest in the subject is arguably on a all-time high.

And for crying out loud, we seriously need a decent "Movie of the Year" contender this late in 2011.

Come September, Seediq Bale (賽德克‧巴萊) will finally hit the big screen in two 90-minute films. The first part, entitled 太陽旗 ("Flag of the Sun", a reference to the national flag of Japan), will be released on September 9th, while the concluding chapter, 彩虹橋 ("Rainbow Bridge", a reference to the mythic bridge for the dead to return to their ancestral lands, much like Bifröst in the Norse mythology) will be released on September 30th. While I sincerely hope that I can watch both films in one screening, I would count myself fortunate if they can eventually find their way here. For the audience in the West, apart from screening in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival, the film will also be shown at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Without further ado, here are the two official trailer for the film.

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

Here's the official synopsis of the film in English, courtesy of the 68th Venice International Film Festival:

Wei Te-Sheng’s epic film Saideke Balai recounts an extraordinary episode from 20th-century history which is little-known even in Taiwan. Between 1895 and 1945, the island was a Japanese colony inhabited not only by the majority (Han Chinese immigrants) but also by the remnants of the aboriginal tribes who first settled in the mountainous land. In 1930 Mouna Rudo, the leader of one of the Seediq tribes settled on and around Mount Chilai, forged a coalition with other Seediq tribal leaders and plotted a rebellion against their Japanese colonial masters. It was to begin at a sports day meeting where the assembled tribesmen were to attack and kill the Japanese officials. The initial uprising took the Japanese by surprise and was almost entirely successful. But the Japanese soon sent in their army to crush the rebellion, using aircraft and poison gas. Mouna Rudo knew from the start that the relatively small force of Seediq tribesmen stood no chance of defeating the might of Japan. But he and his allies were sustained by the beliefs and myths which had nourished their tribes since time immemorial. Young males in the tribes had to undergo a rite de passage to become adult men, which gave them the right to have their faces tattooed. In tribal language, they became Saideke Balai – heroes of the tribe.
